Campaigning against nuclear weapons and for peace

I knew Len through Tower Hamlets CND - he as our esteemed
Chair and me as Secretary. I feel enormous respect and gratitude for the sustained
dedication and capability he brought to this role. We have shared demonstrating
against the stupidity of Britain's nuclear weapons and involvement in war and
arms trade and campaigning within Tower Hamlets. His determination, persistence and powers of
persuasion succeeded in establishing our Mayor in Tower Hamlets as a Mayor for
Peace, under the international movement set
up by the Mayor of Hiroshima to bring together towns and cities around the
world who wish to see a nuclear weapons free and more peaceful world. Tower Hamlets
is now among the 6,857 Mayoral members in 161 countries around the world -
an enduring legacy for our borough.

Len also achieved a coup by infiltrating the biennial International
Arms Fair in London's Docklands in 2013, reporting back to us on the
extraordinary mix of the trappings of a normal commercial exhibition alongside
their appalling wares, including means of warfare, domestic security and repression
and (under the counter) torture, and their customers. The arms fair is not open
to the general public and takes place behind heavily protected security fences
and police lines, so this was another example of Len's intrepid determination
and effectiveness.
